Long before modern Dubai rose majestically from the sand, Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum established his summer retreat just off Jumeirah Beach. Built in 1955 on the site of a former date palm plantation near a fishing village, the two-story residence is constructed from gypsum and coral in the traditional style, with natural ventilation to capture the summer breezes. The roof terrace was originally used for drying dates and open-air sleeping, though its uninterrupted ocean views are now dominated by villa rooftops. Restored in 1994, the open rooms and spacious terraces have been decorated with carpets, cushions and lanterns to show what leisure life was like for one of Dubai's ruling families.
